Hommage à Hermann Nitsch – Musée de l’Orangerie Paris

Au cœur du paysage artistique parisien, le musée national de l’Orangerie dévoile un contrepoint contemporain à son exposition permanente, mettant en lumière les œuvres d’Hermann Nitsch, une figure majeure du mouvement de l’Actionnisme viennois, dont il fut l’un des pionniers. Du 12 octobre 2023 au 12 février 2024, cet événement captivant offre une immersion dans l’univers vibrant de cet artiste.

Né à Vienne en 1938 et décédé en avril 2022 à Mistelbach, où il vécut et travailla, Hermann Nitsch est internationalement reconnu comme le maître de l’art de la performance autrichienne. Son corpus d’œuvres expressives et puissantes s’inspire de la dramaturgie religieuse pour créer un art total, culminant chaque année dans son « Orgien Mysterien Theater », des festivités et performances ininterrompues qui captivaient amis et public depuis les années 1950.

Durant les dernières années de sa carrière, Nitsch a développé une peinture extraordinairement vibrante et colorée, en étroite symbiose avec ses performances et les lieux qui les accueillaient. Fasciné par les Nymphéas de Monet, il rendait hommage à ce chef-d’œuvre de l’impressionnisme au Musée de l’Orangerie lors de ses visites à Paris. Il soulignait ainsi les liens entre les thématiques de son œuvre et celles de Monet, décrivant ses performances comme un « drame accompli, une dramaturgie analytique » qui se traduisait par un tourbillon de couleurs et de formes, à l’image des extases de couleur dans les Nymphéas de Monet.

Bien que Nitsch n’ait pas eu l’opportunité de concrétiser son projet pour le Musée de l’Orangerie, le musée lui rend désormais hommage, un an après sa disparition. Cette exposition réunit une sélection de peintures et d’œuvres graphiques réalisées peu de temps avant sa mort, choisies directement dans l’atelier de l’artiste. Elles sont exposées dans la zone du « Pronaos » menant aux Nymphéas et dans la salle contemporaine du rez-de-chaussée du musée.

The Musée de l’Orangerie, housing a collection of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings, offers a contemporary counterpoint to its permanent exhibitions. Works by Hermann Nitsch, considered a major artist of the Viennese Actionism movement of which he was one of the founders, will be presented from October 12, 2023, to February 12, 2024. During the final years of his career, the artist developed a painting style of great vitality, increasingly colorful, always closely linked to his performative acts and the places where they took place.

Recognized as a major artist of the Viennese Actionism movement, of which he was a founding member, Hermann Nitsch was born in Vienna in 1938 and passed away in April 2022 in Mistelbach, where he lived and worked. Internationally acknowledged as a master of Austrian performance art, the artist created a corpus of expressive and powerful works, drawing from religious dramaturgy to develop a total art that culminated each year from the 1950s in his « Orgies Mysteries Theater, » where he invited friends and the public to six days of uninterrupted festivities and performances.

During the last years of his career, Nitsch developed an extraordinarily vibrant and increasingly colorful form of painting, always closely linked to his performances and the places where they were practiced. He was fascinated by Monet’s Water Lilies, to which he paid tribute at the Musée de l’Orangerie every time he visited Paris. Shortly before his death, he was invited to engage in dialogue with this masterpiece of impressionism, emphasizing the closeness he saw between the themes addressed in his own practice: « In my performances, my expressive and religious painting becomes a completed drama, an analytical dramaturgy. What remains to be seen is a whirlwind of colors and shapes that detach themselves well beyond the content, like the color ecstasies in Monet’s Water Lilies » (2022, in an interview with Sarah Imatte, Heritage Curator at the Musée de l’Orangerie).

Although Nitsch did not have time to realize his project for the Musée de l’Orangerie, the museum wished to pay tribute to him, one year after his death, in the form of this counterpoint, which brings together a selection of paintings and graphic works created shortly before his death, chosen directly from the artist’s studio. They are exhibited in the « Pronaos » area leading to the Water Lilies and in the contemporary room on the ground floor of the museum.
